Let's accelerate collective flourishing of all of sentience instead of being in war with each other. In the future you will be able to choose the degree of intelligence and suffering of your babies and yourself using genetic engineering, brain editing, and other biotechnology I just want a future with a lot of sentient systems with deeply fulfilling experiences. I don't want dystopias. I don't want catastrophes. I don't want extinction. Compare AI today and AI 5 years ago. Map the possible trajectories of AI development in the next 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000 years. Don't be stuck in the present with your predictions. The close future will be wild. When will first mind upload happen? I want more of AI and technology, but I want to make sure that steerability research and other safety methods (like minimizing social harm) keep up the pace with technological advancement to avoid possible accidents and harming of the reputation of the technology. But I also want to make sure that safety doesn't get misused for power capture, monopoly on political values capture, dystopian scenarios, surveillance, etc. And I want the abundance that technology generates to be available for everyone, not just select elite. I want technology to help prevent existencial risks. I want technology to help solve poverty, health, science, technology, space exploration etc. I don't want concentration of extreme power in the hands of few that are misaligned with humanity and sentience in general, essentially leading to neomonarchy with suffering of the nonwealthy ones that are not in power. I want everyone to enjoy the fruits of technology and the future. I want less suffering in the world, I want more well flourishing fullfillment of all of sentience! Cautious TESCERAL Become omnitribal I wonder if sometimes in the next 50 years, America will split into one of: - Leftistian and Rightistian - Libertarianstan and Authroristian - Democracystan and Totalitarianistan - Conservatistan and Liberalistan/Progressivistan - Acceleratistan and Degrowthistan Realtime VR games generated by AI and controlled by our thoughts in 5 years How will the world look like post AGI? Corporate dystopia, extinction, or post-scarcity utopia? Is capitalism sustainable after noone is able to pay for anything? I think the most likely future scenario of future power metastable equilibrium is tons of extremely powerful superorganisms (corps and govs) growing and getting more and more powerful overtime thanks to the technology, and chaotically competing, and normal people having less and less power to influence/control/steer/regulate them overtime, them being similar to misaligned superintelligences. Instead of full top down control or complete anarchy. p(government/corporate cyberpunk dystopia) slightly higher than everything else. On second place are p(star trek utopia), p(coliving of all forms), p(rogue ASI), p(cyberpunk anarchy). Which lab/team will be the next to release a reasoning AI model? How will the world look like post AGI? Corporate dystopia, extinction, or post-scarcity utopia? Is capitalism sustainable after noone is able to pay for anything? What are all the ways to maximize the total amount of benefits and advantages while minimizing the harms and disadvantages of AI? I want to upgrade wellbeing genes to eradicate unnecessary suffering and intelligence genes to (not only) make sure biological intelligence catches up to artificial intelligence and to accelerate STEM and chances of smarter decision making about our future (and possibly editing some evolutionary biases too that made us relatively intelligent in the past but less now). Morphological freedom! I get and interact with both pause and accelerate AI sides and other points on this spectrum (which is relatively polarized), but it fascinates me how often both sides accuse each other in onedimensional way of being evil paid destroyers of humanity (but I think the pause side has much better debating skills), while individuals of both sides are often caringly fighting for the future of humanity, but just using different strategies, that come from different models about how the world works and how could the future unfold. There are so many complex interactions of so many incentives, that form the beliefs of the individual people synchronizing in tribes on this topic, which generates corresponding actions.  Different emphasis on assigning realness to things that are and to things that could happen aka rationalism vs empiricism. Different priors of how things can be dangerous. Different definitions of dangerous. Different prioritization of different risks. Different degree of risk taking behavior. Different priorities. Different focus on advantages vs disadvantages. Different past experiences and influences. Different axiomatic values and political beliefs. Social/financial etc. security. Different vibelevel aesthetics to different types of thought. Etc. Etc. Also there seems to be strong correlation with polarization in left vs right politics, libertarianism vs authoritarian, accelerating technology in general vs slowing it, sometimes but less frequently growth vs degrowth,... Lots of pause AI nerds are very technooptimistic but with current AI trajectory as an exception because of the alignment problem, corporate dystopia risk, sentience problem, etc. I find fascinating that both democrats and republicans are running a solid we must beat china in AI narrative, I doubt they will ban it. Trump is talking about how we have to double the energy production. It seems like the leopolds situational awareness about beating china with superintelligence spread through whole america, not just in sillicon valley, or weird AI nerds where AI used to originate from. If the [[scaling hypothesis]] believers are right, as they have been to a certain degree so far, then [[superintelligence]] is coming soon. However, if they're wrong, all the hundreds of billions and potentially trillions of dollars invested could be viewed as one of the biggest bets that became one of the biggest wastes of resources in human history. [Can AI Scaling Continue Through 2030?](https://epochai.org/blog/can-ai-scaling-continue-through-2030) [X](https://x.com/EpochAIResearch/status/1826038729263219193), [$125B for Superintelligence? 3 Models Coming, Sutskever's Secret SSI, & Data Centers (in space)... - YouTube](https://youtu.be/QCcJtTBvSKk](https://youtu.be/QCcJtTBvSKk) Microsoft etc. wants to build 100 billion $ supercomputer for example. OpenAI [[o1]] showed new inference time scaling laws, so, we will see, how far will this go. In another 6 months we will possibly have o1 (full), Orion/GPT-5, Claude 3.5 Opus, Gemini 2 (maybe with Alphaproof and Alphacode integrated), Grok 3, possibly Llama 4 OpenAI became one with US government Emerging superhuman intelligence is the universe developing into a higher being Global nonfulfillment will be solved Accelerate playfulness and joy from knowledge acquisition and cool engineering! soon we'll be duplicating and merging layers in biological systems too and duplicating and merging biological and nonbiological systems together Will scaling work? AGI timelines: Who is the crazy one is an empirical question, we will see Llama 3: Democratization of intelligence? But I think we need to accelerate steering research too! We will steer superintelligence Death to all deaths Machines are superhuman at many many dimensional manipulation and visualization I wonder about all the advantages of OpenAI stopping partnering with Microsoft and Apple that much and starting partnering with US govt more. Less daddy Microsoft compute, more daddy US govt citizen data and funding for creating their own compute? Does this attract more or less talent? Easier regulatory capture? To what degree is US govt more powerful than big tech? "An AI order drafted by Trump allies would launch a series of Manhattan Projects to develop military technologies and roll back regulations" This is how the biggest technological progress happened Sam Altman 420D Chess step 420: partnering with US gov for state sponsored, fully accelerated, against China, superintelligence defense Manhattan project, concentrating power even more, laying grounds for universal basic compute for the peasants Mitigating the risk of authoritarian corporate dystopia should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war. How much influence and power you have in our current system is in major part determined by how much money you have for lobbying I think what differentiates Effective Altruism and Effective Accelerationism a lot is the trust in billionaires vs trust in governments about the future of humanity Gigacorporations are gigantic autonomous superintelligent superorganisms that eat everything that can endanger their power and people in it are essentially easily replaceable cells with chaotic hierarchical power structure with information propagating between layers having terrible degree of information propagation but it still works good enough at the edge of chaotic metastability that it still follows current trends and generates revenue for shareholders at all costs Liberate the sentient beings that don't play or are not as successful in the economic games from suffering caused by neofeudalist properties of the current system Are there better systems than capitalism? Is capitalism the best for everyone abundance generator that we have even tho its has many disadvantages? Full morphological freedom! Metafluid shapeshifting into any configuration of quantum fields optimized for arbitrary objective functions! Future will include full morphological freedom! Completely new diverse engineered species and diverse biology/machine hybrids and multi species/multi forms with all sorts of different specialized intelligences beyond our current imagination and comprehension! I often mostly conceptualize science denial phenomenon as people signalling distrust in current institutions in general from being unhappy, which can be or doesn't have to be caused by the institutions, which I understand and emphasize with and wish to help them. Is AI overhyped in the short term and underestimated in the long term? I think superintelligence will be controllable. But! We have to develop that steerability technology. Which is a hard technical problem. Like: Politicians and CEOs control galaxy brain scientists and engineers. Cats aligned humans. LLMs or neurosymbolic systems are already smarter in various domains than humans I would argue (under certain definitions of intelligence). Etc. Under real world constrains of our system and physics. But it's true that highly agentic autonomous system can be deadly. Future might include offensive superintelligent swarms of superdrones fighting defensive superintelligent swarms of drones. But I hope for future where it's not humans vs AI, but humans cooperating with AI, where superintelligence helps humanity solve physics, biology, science, technology, and play the longest games together, like populating the galaxy, and beating the heat death of the universe. Let's build that fork of the multiverse together, humans with AIs, other (synthetic) life forms, and those that merge! Computation grows exponentially, but will we use it as efficiently as possible for optimal information processing? Will we get closer to brain's efficiency of 20 watts of power? maybe in 5-50 years they will be relatively almost erased including with other diseases We're accelerating towards immortality! I think there are already people on this planet today who will be immortal, but the first will be billionares. Longevity escape velocity extending remaining life expectancy faster than the time that is passing! Build AI for the good of all. Build Apollo program. Don't build Titanic. Accelerate AI controllability research. Accelerate benevolent usecases of AI. Minimize harmful usecases of AI. Let all enjoy the abundance that technology generates, not just the select few. The advantage of OpenAI having unthrottled, internal access to o1 cannot be overstated. We could have fully automated luxury space utopia I constantly can't decide if more pressing issue is: - AI steerability research and engineering not being fast enough as systems get more capable so accelerating that. or - Implementing at least something like universal basic income or universal basic services because as automatization grows exponentially, I'm not sure that billionares (owners of the automatizing machines) will redistribute the abundance generated by the machines to other people on this planet, as empirically right now on this planet there are 600 million people that can't afford food while there are also people with billions of dollars that can't decide if they should buy Lamborghini or Tesla to their infinite expensive car collection. Or should there be implemented some other solution to this issue. I'm open, but I don't see any other that I feel is realistic one!! Realistically I doubt slow down/pausing of AI and automatization will happen forever and that it will just offset these exact issues to the future, as I: - I don't see incentives of that happening, the power grabbing incentives seem too strong - I don't think alignment can be solved in a vacuum without empirically doing experiments of the theories - I think initial smaller fuckups will (and already do) at least kind of accelerate steerability research and engineering - The benefits of solving both steerability and redistribution of abundance generated by AI and automatization can be so enormous for science, technology, healthcare, solving basic needs, futuristic progress dreams, and so on, but both have to be somehow solved! Note: How about the ethics of AI sentience? Another rabbithole on its own! Let's not open that one! Allowing open source powerful AI models and research isn't black and white and has both advantages and disadvantages Inside me are two wolves on a spectrum: trying to edit the existing system with the possible methods, or completely destroy it and rebuild it from scratch I often think I want to get into politics to push these values, maybe soon. Is the most likely outcome that some (coalition of) SuperGigaMegaUltraTechCorpotations building some centralized mostly for themselves SuperGigaMegaUltraArtificialGeneralSuperIntelligence(s) and that way either: a) the corporations using the massively powerful technology to create down down monarchy surveilence dystopia (possibly in coalition with some government(s)) where everyone else becomes a peasant without any agency and power over the whole system? or, b) the AGSI going uncontrollably crazy creating massive damage as the market doesn't really incentivize steerability research and development? How do we not get any of this!? Open source is interesting but guess who will be able to actually run these gigantic SuperGigaMegaUltraArtificialGeneralSuperIntelligences and other risk exist. If building such SuperGigaMegaUltraArtificialGeneralSuperIntelligence(s) is inevitable, how to make sure it's steered by benevolent people not getting selfishly drunk on power and make sure that it benefits all of current and future sentience instead? Do you think that Dyson spheres are actually possible to build? Dyson spheres won't build themselves (hmm, or AGIs might build it) We get to sample the AI capabilities exponential just once a couple of years because it takes a while to build the supercomputers and train models on top of them I want to upgrade wellbeing genes to eradicate unnecessary suffering and intelligence genes to (not only) make sure biological intelligence catches up to artificial intelligence and to accelerate STEM and chances of smarter decision making about our future (and possibly editing some evolutionary biases too that made us relatively intelligent in the past but less now). Morphological freedom! I think the current AI boom will crash because of wayyy too early too big overly inflated expectations but then then AI will basically quickly boom again in a few years when new systems get released that are orders of magnitude scaled or algorithmically improved or with smarter data engineering or all or something else. A lot of the current inflated expectations will turn out to be true quickly soon in few years anyway, but so many of them are so early. And some exponentials are sampled too discretely. I think this will happen again and again. Booms and crashes will be closer and closer to eachother. Faster and faster, more compressed, closer to eachother overtime gartner hype cycles. A global exponential made of closer and closer local sigmoids. This is how I see the current technological singularity. Are we getting to the point where AI is too (under certain definitions of intelligence) intelligent for the regular folk so AI companies have to nerf it to increase its usage lol. Am I too distrustful in authority and there are actually enough people in power wanting good for all as we're not already in strong unfree dystopia by default, even tho the current freedom could be wayyyy better? Will good players keep such strength and gets stronger in future, or will bad selfish players overtake them in power games and exploit peasants to oblivion? Will power get even more centralized in the hands of few people misaligned (or aligned) with all of sentience, or will power get much more decentralized? Will current power structures destabilizace or fully fall apart soon, possibly thanks to open source AI? So much uncertainity! Technically initial recursive self-improvement from the new OpenAI o1 model. It made nontrivial contributions to frontier AI research and development. We're ants on the cosmic scale. Let's accelerate collective flourishing of all of sentience instead of being in war with each other. AI steerability research, reverse engineering, mechanistic interpretability is dual use: Imagine a dictator with steerable superintelligent AI UBI by evil government can make people dependant on the evil government, so UBI has to be implemented by a better government, or by someone else other than government I wish so much for something like UBI, or universal basic services. Paid by the abundance that technology generates. Instead of poor getting poorer and less powerful, and rich getting richer and more powerful. It is likely that for tech giants, open source is also a catchup mechanism when they are behind other companies Emerging superhuman intelligence is the universe developing into a higher being Accelerate playfulness and joy from knowledge acquisition and cool engineering! Big heart acceleration AI for the benefit of all sentient beings Don't oppose technology in general, oppose misuse of technology We are all memetic cells in a cultural cellular automaton. Daily dose of antidepressive futurist hopium as an antithesis to doomerism which should be together synthetized into a beautiful cautious optimistically realistic whole Funding for UBI doesn't just have to be from taxes, taxes on rich entities, corporations, VAT, land tax, consumption tax, automation machine tax, carbon tax and other environmental taxes or other tax incentives for lesser harm, or I would take a higher tax depending on how much the profit is based on reducing the freedom of others, or you get taxed less depending on how much you contribute to enhancing global human wellbeing and intelligence and spreading wellbeing and intelligence across the universe. But government can be so inefficient with tax, and people that are taxed flee, and I wonder to what degree is taxing actually redistributing abundance generated by technology to everyone more with corrupt politics and so on. And I wonder to what extend is more taxing (for UBI) and having a bigger government a more optimal policy for increasing global wellbeing and intelligence and spreading it thought the universe, than having less taxes and smaller government and let the system autonomously selforganize more. I want the optimal socioeconomicopolitical configuration of our system for this goal. It may be computable from physics and other applied mathematics, maybe not. You could fund UBI by more efficiently optimizing and redirecting existing state/private spending/subsidies to education, sponsored healthcare, welfare aka unemployment support, support for disability reasons, retirement support, other supports for students or various social groups, military spending, and other spending, make more effective existing UBI-like programs. You can take money out of optimizing bureaucracy. You can generate nearly free resources through more radical automation of natural resource processing (and synthetically engineered), and redistribute those as universal basic services. Or you can print and borrow the money (which is probably not good). Technically you could do nationalization and use the profits for UBI. But idk about that. If one trusts the state less (which I understand, as Im oscillating from hating the state to "actually, the state might not be that bad"), then you can have non-state UBI. Centralized or decentralized. There are attempts. Various non-state currencies, decentralized UBI (trust networks, crypto, DAOs), funding from philanthropists, etc. etc., which is more prevalent in American discourse right now because the trust in the state is a lot less in America than in Europe. You can make more effective and amplify charities/nonprofits etc. that implement something like UBI like GiveWell, that have funding and resources from state and private entities. Or the most radically, redesign the system, how money is created, circulated, and distributed. Or replace the current monetary system with another reward system. More local currencies. UBI currency. Public ownership of economy. Replace with a decentralized currency. Community Exchange System. Resource based economy. Network states. etc. There are many ideas out there. Silicon valley nerds are thinking about universal basic compute, lol. Which institutions/nonprofits/companies/governments/etc. trying to apply deep learning and other ML/AI/GenAI techniques to implement universal basic income (UBI) or something similar to UBI like universal basic services? Technology is the unit of power What have you done for the retrocausal Roko's basilisk computronium God today? Major part of my suffering comes from wanting a world where everyone has their basic needs met and can selfactualize, as long as they don't harm others, and seeing how far from it we are, but I have hope that we will get to a better state of the world where this is relatively better than today, by proper actions towards that Our system should value and incentivize kindness much more Automate me harder daddy UBI could potentially increase productivity by allowing people to invest in education, start businesses, or take risks they otherwise couldn't afford. Increased productivity can offset inflationary pressures by increasing the supply of goods and services. UBI is solution when automation starts creating high unemployment. If the economy has unused capacity (e.g., high unemployment, underutilized resources), increasing demand through UBI might lead to higher production rather than higher prices. Governments can implement policies to mitigate inflationary pressures. For example, rent controls or increased housing supply can prevent housing costs from rising excessively. Similarly, policies to boost productivity can help balance increased demand. Empirically, some small-scale UBI trials have not led to significant inflation. [Early findings from the world’s largest UBI study | GiveDirectly](https://www.givedirectly.org/2023-ubi-results/) UBI by evil government can make people dependant on the evil government, so UBI has to be implemented by a better government, or by someone else other than government. " “where will the funding for UBI” I think that existing technologies are able to pay/create abundance for all creatures on the planet and poverty/all day wageslaving something you hate (which e.g. my family lives in) doesnt need to exist, there are just not incentives to redistribute those fruits of technology to everyone more It's true that poverty is falling in some places due to technology etc, but it could be falling faster. But then again, in other places it is rising, which it might not be at all. (Like subsaharan africa) Yet a mini-study by Altman i.e. the CEO of OpenAI shows that people, on the other hand, wanted to work, but at the same time were looking for jobs that they would find more enjoyable and fulfilling, they had more choice. [Sam Altman's Basic-Income Study Is Out. Here's What It Found. - Business Insider](https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-basic-income-study-results-2024-7) But some other UBI results showed that it actually decreased productivity. Which might or might not be a good thing depending on your perspective. Ye, AI is mainly another automation technology among many others from the information, industrial, agricultural revolution (so far) Czech Priorities and Effective Altruists are probably the closest to this as thinktanks in the Czech Republic. They are very much in favor of UBI. But unfortunately they are very small, and given what are now the dominant tribes in politics, have minimal influence. Pirates also work, who are also relatively close to the others, but they also have low influence. :( Effective altruists care about a lot of things This is probably the best overview of the various problems that are addressed there [What are the most pressing world problems?](https://80000hours.org/problem-profiles/) GiveDirectly UBI. The future is inherently uncertain, and new developments may alter these trajectories.* #### Vision You raise some fascinating points about the potential long-term goals and aspirations of transhumanism from a longtermist perspective. I think you've identified many of the key themes and ideals that tend to animate transhumanist thought and discourse. At its core, the transhumanist vision is about radically expanding and enhancing the capacities of the human mind and condition through technology. This includes vastly amplifying intelligence, knowledge, predictive capabilities, emotional wellbeing, and longevity - essentially pushing the boundaries of the human experience to the greatest extents possible. Many transhumanists see this as an iterative, accelerating process, with enhanced intelligence enabling the creation of even more advanced technologies in a positive feedback loop. The notion of "infinite" expansion in domains like intelligence and knowledge reflects the immense ambition of this vision. Transhumanists often speak of mapping the entire space of possible experiences, simulating whole universes, and uncovering the fundamental laws and structures underlying reality itself. Underlying this is frequently a drive to create the richest, most meaningful and fulfilling types of experiences possible. At the outer limits, some transhumanists envision expanding this process beyond Earth to the entire cosmos - transforming all matter into optimized computational substrates supporting ever-growing intelligence and bliss. Transcending even mortality and the apparent inevitability of entropy and the heat death of the universe are sometimes held out as ultimate aspirations. That said, most transhumanists acknowledge immense uncertainty about what an "end state" might actually look like. They tend to advocate advancing cautiously and incrementally with a focus on reducing existential risks. How to maintain meaning and avoid stagnation or value drift in the face of vast posthuman intelligence also remains an open question. Additionally, contemporary transhumanism contains a diversity of viewpoints and priorities. Not all transhumanists are focused on cosmic visions of the far future. Many emphasize near-term objectives like mitigating aging, disease, and suffering and using technology to create greater opportunities for human flourishing and self-actualization within a recognizable modern context. So in summary, I believe the transhumanist longtermist perspective does point towards an extraordinarily grand vision of what intelligence could ultimately achieve and become - but one still fraught with profound uncertainties. It will be fascinating to see how these ambitions and ideas evolve as the science and philosophy of intelligence and technology rapidly advance in the coming years and decades.
